  • Watching the atrocities of russia’s unjust war made many Kiwis want to help Ukraine. New Zealand soldiers were reminded of the scenes from the Bosnian war, Afghanistan, and Iraq, but they couldn’t just watch knowing that they had something to offer and could help. The Kiwi heroes like Dominic Abelen and Kane TeTai both made the ultimate sacrifice and gave their “All” fighting for what they believed to be right – the people of Ukraine and their freedom. Many of their brothers-in-arms who followed them to Ukraine remain there to date. New Zealanders continue to fight for Ukraine, and they need support to keep doing so. There are currently few volunteers from NZ fighting in Ukraine as part of the Foreign Legion. Owen is also serving as a chaplain for a Special Forces Unit in the East of Ukraine currently. Additionally, Owen has been facilitating food and aid to civilian and military communities up into Donetsk and down to the Kherson region. And is also the charity ambassador for GCS Charity (a registered NGO in Ukraine and in the UK), and the East Ukraine representative to distribute RRT food boxes.

  • ReliefAid was founded in 2015, by Kiwi Mike Seawright, with the vision of saving lives and alleviating the suffering of people affected by armed conflict through independent and impartial humanitarian action. By July 2023 they have delivered emergency aid to over 350,000 people in Ukraine, Syria and Afghanistan. Following the start of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 Mike Seawright went to Ukraine to see how they could help. As a result, ReliefAid has been on the ground since March 2022 actively delivering humanitarian aid. Their aid interventions have included the distribution of emergency shelter materials, food, medical supplies, clothing, wood-fired stoves, and solar lamps. The aid deliveries reach people in front-line areas including Kharkiv, Kramatorsk, Preobrazhenka, and Kherson (responding to the flooding). The team prides itself on being on the ground and able to respond swiftly to emergencies, ensuring that aid reaches those in urgent need in a timely manner. You can donate to support their efforts HERE.
